Cadets must achieve the following learning objectives:
1. Campsite Selection & Layout
Demonstrate an understanding of basic campsite selection by:
Identifying key considerations for a safe campsite, including:
Ground condition and drainage
Shelter from wind and weather
Proximity to water sources
Safety from environmental hazards
Producing a simple campsite layout sketch showing:
Assessment may be conducted through discussion and a hand-drawn sketch.
2. Shelter Pitching & Striking
With guidance and supervision:
Demonstrate:
Correct use of pegs, poles, and guy lines
Safe and orderly dismantling and packing
Task may be completed as a group activity.
3. Care of Tents
Demonstrate knowledge of general tent care, including:
Proper pitching practices to prevent damage
Keeping tents clean and dry
Correct packing and storage after use
4. Wet & Windy Weather Precautions
Demonstrate understanding of precautions required in adverse weather, including:
Correct tent orientation and securing
Drainage considerations (where permitted)
Protection of personal and group equipment
Demonstrate knowledge of:
Common causes of fire in camps
Basic fire prevention measures
Safe conduct around cooking stoves and fire points
Live fire use is subject to school and site regulations.
With assistance and supervision:
Assessment may be shared across a group.
7. Food, Water & Waste Management
Demonstrate understanding of:
Safe storage and handling of food
Proper management of drinking water
Responsible waste and rubbish management in camp
Demonstrate understanding of camp health rules, including:
Personal hygiene practices
Cleanliness of cooking and living areas
Importance of sanitation in preventing illness
Construct at least two simple camp gadgets, such as:
Natural materials may be used where permitted.
10. Personal Equipment & Kit
Demonstrate knowledge of:
Assessment may be conducted through inspection or verbal explanation.
